My Ultra-Beloved Grandma, And How Much I'll Miss Her

So here's a photo of me, my brother, and my ultra-beloved Grandmother, taken a few years ago when I still was known to frequent barber shops. (Yikes! That hair is short...)

Pat Hommel

As for how much I'll miss her -- let's just say "a lot, a lot, a lot" -- which is also a pretty good description of how much I loved her, how much I respected her, and how much I appreciated what she did for my family over the years. This was a woman who knew how to love her family, and for decades, she was the calming center of many a stormy family crisis. God bless you, Grandma Pat; it's only fair, since you blessed us with your wisdom, and light, and love for so many years.

Oh, and tell my Dad I said "hi." I'll be thinking about you both, lots...

A memorial mass will be held for Patricia Devine Hommel on Monday, June 27, 2005, at 5pm, at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Clarksville, Indiana. She died Sunday, June 19, at Providence Retirement Home, in New Albany.

Patricia Hommel was born February 26, 1919, in Clarksville. She graduated from Jeffersonville High in 1937. She received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University South East in 1971, and earned a master’s degree in education in 1979.

Patricia was a long-time elementary school teacher, serving as an instructor at Utica Elementary and Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Jeffersonville, Holy Family School in New Albany, and George Rogers Clark Elementary and Green Acres Elementary in Clarksville. She served as a member of the first elected Clarksville School Board. Patricia was a charter member of Concerned Citizens for Racial Harmony, a group dedicated to bringing together people of all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds in Southern Indiana. She was a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party, and was active in the Clarksville Historical Society. She was also a supporter and volunteer at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville.

She is survived by her brother, Mike Devine of Clarksville; two daughters, Julie Campbell (and husband Oni Shaw), of Brookings, Oregon and Margie Hommel, of Clarksville, one son, Fred Hommel, of Clarksville, daughter-in-law Kathryn Carriker Campbell, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Bledsoe, of Floyds Knobs, and Mary Jean “Jeanie” Popp, of Clarksville; one son, Howard Campbell, of Clarksville, in 2004, and husbands Howard Eugene Campbell (1977), Ernie Hommel (1964) and Eugene Young (2004).

Coots Funeral Home of Jeffersonville is in charge of the arrangements. As per her wishes, there will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Clarksville Riverfront Foundation, 201 West Riverside Dr., Clarksville, IN, 47129.

This Is Sort of Ridiculous

Okay, so I got an e-mail today from a concert promoter, which included this text:

Since 1968 Jethro Tull has been delighting millions of fans with an eclectic and progressive rock and blues infused style that has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. While 23 men have been counted as one-time members of Jethro Tull, their unique sound and eccentric vision have been piloted by wildman-flautist-singer-songwriter Ian Anderson and guitarist Martin Barre since the beginning. Today Jethro Tull is also comprised of Doane Perry on drums, Andrew Giddings on keyboards and Jonathan Noyce on bass.

Now, I don't know about you, but 23 seems like an awful lot of people able to go around and have a legitimate claim to being a member of Jethro Tull. So I ask you: Which "band" has had more members? Have there been more Tull-ians than Doobie Brothers? How many people can claim to be Mamas and/or Papas? (Side note: Here's a former Tull member who could, in fact, throw his/her lot in with both of those camps.) If a rolling stone gathers no moss, how many Stones can gather in one room? Is there a band out there with more legitimate members over the years than Tull? I dare all non-poker-bot posters to leave a comment, with your candidates.

Side note: Yes, it's just about time to upgrade the software running this website. Dang poker-bots and viagra-bots will soon be flooding the comments with spam, and that's not a good thing. Consider this my bi-annual threat to upgrade/revamp the website.
