(I sent this in as a letter to Josh Marshall's excellent Talking Points Memo website, then realized... hey, I have my own site, too!)
One of AP’s top stories this hour:
"Group: Gore a hypocrite over power bill"
Which brings to mind several questions, not the least of which is: This is news??? Al Gore's utility bill? Why? What’s Gore running for? Why is he subject to this kind of inane scrutiny? And how on earth is this considered to be a "Top Story"? I can understand some of the roots of "Clinton Hatred," but "Gore Hatred"? Why? What did he ever do, except win the popular vote for President, serve as Vice President for eight peaceful and prosperous years, serve his country in the armed forces...
CNN’s rancid morning show had this to say about the whole deal, early Tuesday morning:
SOLEDAD: “Al Gore is firing back this morning on critics who say he is not practicing what he was preaching in his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” The day after Gore took home an Oscar for that movie, critics are charging that Gore’s mansion in Nashville devours over twenty times the national average in kilowatt hours. The average electrical bill is twelve hundred bucks a month; a thousand dollars a month for the gas bill…”
Aside from the flunking grade this story would automatically receive in any Reporting I class (it contains a factual error; Gore didn't "take home an Oscar"; he wasn't a nominee for the film, although it heavily features him, of course...) look at the loaded words. "Devours"... "mansion" ... I'm sure Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, heck, even George H.W. Bush live in non-energy devouring non-mansions.
This, of course, was followed by a "coming up" tease of CNN's Iraq coverage titled: Democrats Divided. Which would have been its own level of horrible, had it not come at the end of a segment which ALREADY included a lengthy Andrea Koppel contribution about, you guessed it, whether the Democrats were divided on Iraq, and how that was hurting them politically.
At that point, I switched off my TV, threw down my remote and went back to bed.
