Sense of Humour

For the nation that gave the world Monty Python, turns out Britain doesn't have much of a sense of "humour."

According to this story, the woman who has been doing the public address annoucements for the London Underground ("Mind the gap," etc.) has been sacked. Her crime? Posting samples of her work - including some very funny parody subway announcements- on her website.

The announcements, located for now here, are actually quite funny, and are found on the same page as her master demo "showreel," spotlighting the variety of her work. I wish I had a voice over job to give her. Emma Clarke - stay strong! The world needs to get a sense of humour.

The Title Says It All...

It's called, "The Heartbreaking Voices of Uncertainty," and after you watch it, you'll wonder if these major media moguls have any shame, or perhaps are suffering from the most ill-timed case of collective amnesia yet on record.

Stay strong, WGA. This DGA and NABET member is with you all the way.

... and if the man himself says Han shot first, who are we to question him?

Am I the only one both a little psyched, and a little worried that they're making a new Indiana Jones film? Like... how can it possibly be as good as the first three?

A First!

I've been "blogging" or whatever you want to call it for about ten years. My first webpage was called, for reasons perhaps best left unexplored, The Punch Drunk Monkey-Thon. But this is the first time we've ever actually had the technology at hand to add video of drunken monkeys to the website.

You're welcome!

Mark Evanier's indispensible blog has the best write-up on the death of Larry "Bud" Melman, aka Calvert DeForest. I'll snag the same embedded video, and share it with you here. Great stuff, and a potent reminder of why Letterman in the 80's was just so damn fantastic.

Losing The War On Military Operation Naming

Is this really the best we can do?

Stars & Stripes: Military: Attacks down in Baghdad, but too early to predict trend

Nearly 70 large-scale operations have been launched in Baghdad by Iraqi and American forces since kicking off Operation Enforcing the Law on Feb. 14, military officials said Monday.

Ah, it makes one yearn for the days of "Operation Swift and Decisive Victory," doesn't it?

From the "Headlines We Could All Do Without" department:

Man burns genitals in 'Jackass' stunt

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Attempts to do a movie stunt landed one man in the hospital with burned genitals and another facing criminal charges. The men were trying to do a stunt from one of the "Jackass" movies, in which a character lights his genitals on fire.

The Media Treats Al Gore Fairly... Yeah, Right!

(I sent this in as a letter to Josh Marshall's excellent Talking Points Memo website, then realized... hey, I have my own site, too!)

One of AP’s top stories this hour:

"Group: Gore a hypocrite over power bill"

Which brings to mind several questions, not the least of which is: This is news??? Al Gore's utility bill? Why? What’s Gore running for? Why is he subject to this kind of inane scrutiny? And how on earth is this considered to be a "Top Story"? I can understand some of the roots of "Clinton Hatred," but "Gore Hatred"? Why? What did he ever do, except win the popular vote for President, serve as Vice President for eight peaceful and prosperous years, serve his country in the armed forces...

CNN’s rancid morning show had this to say about the whole deal, early Tuesday morning:

SOLEDAD: “Al Gore is firing back this morning on critics who say he is not practicing what he was preaching in his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” The day after Gore took home an Oscar for that movie, critics are charging that Gore’s mansion in Nashville devours over twenty times the national average in kilowatt hours. The average electrical bill is twelve hundred bucks a month; a thousand dollars a month for the gas bill…”

Aside from the flunking grade this story would automatically receive in any Reporting I class (it contains a factual error; Gore didn't "take home an Oscar"; he wasn't a nominee for the film, although it heavily features him, of course...) look at the loaded words. "Devours"... "mansion" ... I'm sure Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, heck, even George H.W. Bush live in non-energy devouring non-mansions.

This, of course, was followed by a "coming up" tease of CNN's Iraq coverage titled: Democrats Divided. Which would have been its own level of horrible, had it not come at the end of a segment which ALREADY included a lengthy Andrea Koppel contribution about, you guessed it, whether the Democrats were divided on Iraq, and how that was hurting them politically.

At that point, I switched off my TV, threw down my remote and went back to bed.

The State of Our Union

Got to love the Quotations of Theodore Roosevelt, including this particularly perceptive observation, perfect for these troubled times.

The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.

Yeah!

Oh, sure, we dropped it. 14th year in a row for the Xtina Warren Ball Drop. (Search the archives for "Ball Drop" to see what all the fuss is about.) Fantastic time, growing crowd (60+), lots of kids... Something tells me we could top the century mark (100+) in 2008.

Or, we could be back down to about 15.

That's the thing about Ball Drop. You just never know...

A Big Welcome To This World

Had to sneak this 'blog entry in before midnight...

I became an uncle today! Well, officially an uncle, at least... I've been an "uncle" for several years, but you can toss those quote marks away, because this evening, my sister-in-law Lydia became a momma for the first time. In fact, new titles for everyone! Doctor Mom becomes (gasp!) Grandma Doctor Mom! Morgan's a daddy!

Lydia, Morgan, and Baby X are all doing great! And, did I mention, I'm an uncle? Yay, yay, yay, and a big welcome to the as-yet unnamed niece whom I just can't wait to meet!

Almost Done...

We're still getting ready for our big move to a new software package and new website format... But for the time being, yes, this site still exists, and yes, some big changes are coming in the months ahead. Patience! I'm hopeful this 'site will be back, and better than ever, sooner rather than later.

Thanks for your continued support!
